Drying the AMS spools

The AMS-compatible spool from 3dk.berlin consists of a cardboard cylinder and side panels made of recycled plastic. When heated—for example, during the drying process—the spool expands, causing the plastic side panels to stretch the cardboard core. However, this process is irreversible, and therefore, the side panels may detach after cooling because the cardboard core does not return to its original shape.

If you want to dry the material on the spool using temperatures higher than 45 °C, you should secure the spool beforehand to prevent it from falling apart. We have developed a spool retainer and made it available for free download to prevent the spool from falling apart.

It is important to ensure that the coil retainer remains in the coil after it has been heated until the coil is completely used up, as the coil could otherwise fall apart prematurely.

The side panels are made of recycled PETG. The maximum drying temperature for this material is 65 °C. This is sufficient for all of our materials.
